New York Mets outfielder Brandon Nimmo met with reporters following his arrival to camp in Port St. Lucie on Saturday morning.

When asked about a potential contract extension, the pending free agent said he hasn’t been approached by the team yet, but he’d definitely be interested in staying in New York long-term. Nimmo left CAA Sports this offseason and is now represented by Scott Boras.

“This is all I’ve know, being a New York Met,” Nimmo said. “I like the direction this team is heading. Steve at the helm of things wants to win and will do whatever it takes in order to win, and that’s what you need first and foremost.”

Cohen has certainly shown that this offseason, already spending big on Starling MarteEduardo EscobarMark Canha, and Max Scherzer in free agency. Moving forward, however, he may be a bit hampered by the newly added “Steve Cohen tax” in the CBA.

Nimmo, the Mets’ rep for the players association was amongst the players who voted no on the proposal, and as expected, he told reporters this morning that he certainly wasn’t a huge fan of the new tax.

“That was one thing that we weren’t totally for… But it is what it is, in the deal-making process you have to concede some things and our majority felt like that was the right decision… He’ll figure out a way to do his best with the circumstances,” Nimmo said.

Nimmo is coming off another injury-plagued season in 2021. He appeared in just 92 games, but when he was on the field he was one of the Mets’ best players. Nimmo continued improving in center and was yet again an on-base machine at the top of the order.

He figures to slot in there again but may see more time in the corner outfield spots with the addition of Marte. No matter where he’s playing, Nimmo certainly seems determined to bring a ring back to the big apple.

“Being here as long as I have, every year all I hear about is the ’69 Mets and the ’86 Mets, I want to be one of those teams,” the outfielder said. “I want to be one of those teams that brings a World Series back here. That would be amazing to have a parade in New York, I would like to be a part of that.”
