Superagent Scott Boras held his annual press conference at the GM Meetings in Arizona on Wednesday and delivered his typical punny responses, including his way of saying that Mets’ first baseman Pete Alonso is open to a contract extension, “When it comes to the polar bear, we’re not in contract hibernation.”

Boras noted that he’s talked “at length” with Mets president of baseball ops David Stearns during the GM Meetings. Stearns, talking to reporters on Tuesday, reiterated from his introductory press conference that he sees Alonso as the Mets starting first baseman come Opening Day.

Alonso is arbitration-eligible for the final time this offseason and is projected to make $22 million in his last season under contract with the Mets.

It’s been widely discussed that Mets owner Steve Cohen could dial back his spending this offseason after making big splashes each of the last two years, but Boras still believes the Mets will spend. “When you have the bigger jet, and you say you’re going slower, you’re still going faster.”

Alonso finished second in the majors this season with 118 RBIs and his 46 home runs were good for third in baseball. The 28-year-old will enter the 2024 season only 60 home runs shy of tying Darryl Strawberry for the Mets franchise record.
