Just ten games into his New York Mets tenure, Billy McKinney has been a very pleasant addition to this injury-plagued squad.

The Mets, of course, acquired McKinney two weeks ago after he was DFA’d by the Milwaukee Brewers in exchange for minor league left-hander Pedro Quintana. Since then, he has played a solid outfield and has provided a nice little spark for this Mets offense.

The sweet swinging lefty has accumulated eight hits, six of which have gone for extra-bases, and has driven in six runs. He also has posted a .900 OPS, 148 OPS+, has stolen a base, and drawn four walks.

Hitting atop the order, McKinney played a huge role in the Mets bouncing back to split this weekend’s series with the San Diego Padres.

McKinney just missed a game-tying homer in the series opener on Thursday night, and may’ve had an inside-the-parker, but was held up by third base coach Gary DiSarcina and settled for a run scoring triple. He did’t record a hit but drew two walks on Friday night, and then doubled in Saturday’s win.

McKinney had his biggest game of the series in Sunday afternoon’s 6-2 win to secure the split. After Jose Peraza cracked a ground-rule double with one out in the third, McKinney lined a single to center to drive in the Mets’ first run of the game.

Leading off the top of the sixth, McKinney again lined a single to center for his second hit of the ballgame. After he stole second and advanced to third on a Francisco Lindor ground out, Pete Alonso singled to center to drive McKinney in to make it 3-0 Mets.

Overall on the day, he went 2-for-5 with a pair of singles, a run scored, a run driven in, three walks, and his first stolen base as a Met. Postgame, Mets manager Luis Rojas complemented the youngster and what he’s brought to this injury-plagued squad thus far.

“He’s been great thus far. He’s really been an awesome addition for us, he’s certainly been very valuable,” the second year skipper said.

Thus far, the 26-year old has absolutely been very valuable for the Mets. He has proved to be a very solid piece at the plate, in the field, and even on the bases. While McKinney might not be a star, he has certainly shown that he has the tools to help this team win ballgames down the stretch.

Upon his arrival to the team two weeks ago McKinney told reporters, “I’m really glad to be here now with a new opportunity.. I’m excited to come here and play and try to do everything I can to help the team win any way, any how.”

The young slugger has certainly done his share to help hold down the fort while the Mets’ regulars heal up, and if he keeps this up, he just might be playing himself into a roster spot when they eventually return.
