Last weekend, Carlos Beltran strongly hinted to John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle, that he would veto his no-trade clause to approve a deal to the Giants.
“I have made it clear to the organization that the only way I’d accept a deal is if it’s to a team that’s contending,” the Mets’ outfielder said. “I think they did an excellent job,” he said. “That shows you right there, you don’t have to have a good lineup to win the World Series. You have to have good pitching. All their starters pitched seven strong innings, and their closer came in and closed the deal. Nobody thought they were going to be able to do it, but you don’t have to build a team around offense to win.”
Carlos Beltran made similar comments about the possibility of joining the Red Sox to Michael Silverman of the Boston Herald.
They’re in first place. It’s a no-brainer. Boston is a great team. Like I say man, the Mets know that I have made it clear to them , I’m willing to listen if they want to trade me. All I want to be is on a team that has a chance to go to the playoffs. I know that there are a lot of teams out there having a good season.
Both the Red Sox and Giants have been known to have strong interest in acquiring the Mets right fielder and some believe that Giants manager Bruce Bochy could have been wooing Beltran when he selected him as a reserve for All-Star team, and then penciling him in to start and bat second in last night’s 5-1 win over the American League.
A Mets front office also told Andy Martino of the Daily News, that the Mets will probably save a lot more by unloading Beltran, than by keeping him and selling more tickets in a Wild Card run.
