Here is the latest update on Baseball America’s Top 10 Mets Prospects as presented by our old young friend Jacob Resnick.

It looks pretty similar at the top with very little change compared to the mid-season update. However we have two new additions in No. 9 Joel Diaz and No. 10 Calvin Ziegler.

Diaz, 17, impressed in his first season of pro ball and the right-hander turned some heads in the DSL. In 15 starts Diaz struck out 63 batters in 50.1 innings while walking only nine. He exhibited solid control considering his age and remarkably, did not allow any home runs. His 0.54 ERA, 0.755 WHIP and 11.3 K/9 made him an easy choice for the No. 9 spot.

The Mets selected 18-year old Ziegler in the second round and signed him for well below slot. Mets scouting director Marc Tramuta explained why the organization is so high on the right-hander. “We really liked his delivery, he had a lot of athletic movements and he was throwing 95-96 in the sixth inning and was commanding his fastball. I felt very strongly about taking him in the second round.”

Alvarez and Mauricio continue to improve and raise their stock as top prospects. Both will continue to hone their defensive skills at catcher and shortstop until they get the call to the Bigs either late in 2022 or early in 2023. Alvarez is rated as the best hitter for average in the Mets system while Mauricio is easily the best defensive infielder.

Baty and Vientos both play third base as their primary positions and it will be interesting to see which of them stick. Both wield impressive power and hit tools, but Baty is clearly more polished and his speed makes him a legit 5-tool prospect.

Right-hander Matt Allan is still the team’s top pitching prospect despite undergoing Tommy John surgery in May. Before tearing his UCL, the 20-year old had the organization’s best fastball and curveball. We hope to see this exciting young pitcher on the mound again sometime early next season.
