The New York Mets have announced they’ve activated veteran infielder Asdrubal Cabrera off the disabled list and sent infielder Gavin Cecchini back to Triple-A Las Vegas.
Cabrera went 3 for 8 with the St. Lucie Mets in two rehab games. The 31-year old shortstop has been on the DL twice this year and hobbled a good portion of the time he’s been active.
Cecchini went 4 for 14 with a home run off Clayton Kershaw in his four game stint as the Mets second baseman.
The under-performing Jose Reyes stays on the Mets roster for reasons unknown at this point. This would have been the perfect opportunity to send him packing.
Instead the Mets, in what has been a lost season, send down a 23-year-old prospect in Cecchini that has played well in a short stint. Cecchini should have stayed up for the Mets to get a better judge on what he can offer them in the future.
Earlier today, Buster Olney said the Mets were ready to begin their fire sale, the first move should have been designating Reyes for assignment.
