Last week, the Daily News reported that the Mets have talked to Carl Pavano’s agent and are genuinely interested in bringing the former Yankee to Flushing.
Dave Pepe said his client Pavano “has no trepidation about playing in New York. He’s a veteran. He’s been doing this a long time.”
“The Mets obviously have a need,” Pepe said. “I don’t want to be misleading — I’m sure they’re reaching out to a lot of people. Carl has an interest in that situation if they have an interest in him. I don’t know where he is on their priority list. I am talking to a bunch of other teams as well. … He’s confident he’s going to be in a rotation and throwing a lot of innings.”
Pavano, 37, was 2-5 with a 6.00 ERA in 11 starts for the Twins last year, missing time with a bone bruise in his shoulder.
Today, Troy E. Renck of the Denver Post writes that the Rockies are aggressively pursuing Pavano, whom they have tried to acquire numerous times over the last few seasons.
Other teams that have been linked to Pavano include the Marlins and Twins.
The Mets front office has been waiting out the free agent market for the last 3 1/2 months hoping that a potential bargain would fall to them at a very below market price. So far that hasn’t happened and that’s why they have yet to sign a player to a major league deal.
With serious interest picking up for both Joe Saunders and Carl Pavano, the Mets may be priced out of the picture for both of them.
