On a night with the undisputed oddest game of the season, including a cycle, an eleven run, four error inning, a runner hit by a ball running to second, a catcher’s interference on a pitch out, a grand slam, and a major league debut, there are a lot to talk about. So let’s start with Pelfrey’s replacement, Chris Schwinden. A rude welcoming to the majors by Colorado. He was tagged for a run in the first with a homerun from Tulo, and then was able to throw zeros on the scoreboard until what I’m sure fans will from now on refer to as, “the inning.” But we’ll get to that later. Eventually Schwinden was finally pulled with a final line of four innings, seven hits, six runs – five earned – one walk, no strikeouts and allowed two homeruns. He was given a 6-2 lead but could not hold it. Mets announce they are sticking with Schwinden for his next start.
So let’s get to that interesting fifth inning. Well after the Mets score an impressive four runs in the top of the inning, the Rockies retaliated. After a throwing error by Schwinden, a walk and a base hit, Carlos Gonzalez hit a three-run homerun. That ended Schwinden’s day as Acosta came in to pitch. Then really all hell broke loose. The fifth inning was a major collapse, implosion, and just an utter cluster **** of an inning. Let’s just say it included three pitchers, fifteen batters, a hit by pitch, seven hits, four errors, eleven runs, two three-run homeruns, a run scored despite the ball being twenty feet from home, and two call arguments from Terry Collins. This ties a Franchise record low of allowing eleven runs in an inning, also matching a franchise high of four errors in an inning.
So the bullpen got worn out tonight. Acosta and Batista combine for an inning with five hits, seven runs, and two walks to Acosta. Ramirez goes 1.2 innings allowing four hits, four runs on a grand slam and a walk. Parnell gets two outs, allows one run on three hits. Byrdak gets two outs as well without allowing a hit. Worn out was an understatement.
In all of this debacle, Zach Lutz started at first base. He was nothing exciting. He went 1-5 with a run, three K’s, an error and just all around poor defense. His future is not at first base. Made me miss Nick Evans a little, not gonna lie.
Ruben Tejada had his second four hit game this season. Duda and Nickeas get two hits, Wright and Kirk with a hit each, and Murphy with an 0-fer to round out your hitters.
Notes
Josh Thole has a career-high 10 game hitting streak. Thole was also charged with his third catcher’s interference on the season (another error). A pitchout was called and the batter swung at it and hit Thole’s glove. You can’t make this up, folks.
Scott Hairston does something the Mets did not predict he would do when resigning him. He hit the 10th cycle in franchise history. First Met since Jose Reyes on 6/21/06. Second Met to hit for the cycle before the sixth inning. Hairston had only five hits on the season this morning.
Mets had six errors tonight, one shy of club record. Mets had seven against the Pirates in 1996.
Mets had 9 runs, 17 hits and Hairston hit for the cycle….and they still lost by nine.
