Peter Alonso is set to appear in the Futures Game today in Washington as one of the two Mets farmhands set to represent the club, with the other being the team’s top prospect, Andres Gimenez.

The first baseman is very excited for the opportunity as detailed by Betsy Helfand of the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

“It’s going to be an exciting weekend. I’m really stoked for it. I’ve got family coming and my girlfriend coming so it’s going to be a good weekend.”

At the beginning of the season, Alonso admits that playing in this game, that starts off All-Star weekend, was a big goal that he wanted to achieve this season and it’s special to him that he will get to appear in it today.

“It was something that was a goal. I wanted to play well enough to be named a part of the Futures team and I’m just really thankful. I play hard, work hard and that’s just a result of good results and hard work.”

The 23-year old certainly has been working hard this season too and dividends are paying off as he has hit .289/.359/.524 this season with 18 home runs and 63 RBI this season between Double-A Binghamton and Triple-A Las Vegas.

Right before the minor league All-Star break, though, Alonso started to struggle for a brief period, with being promoted to Triple-A Las Vegas possibly being a factor.

However, he has managed to right the ship a bit since returning, as he is 3-for-8 with two home runs and six RBI since the minor league affiliates restarted play on Friday night.

“I feel like those are just tell-tale signs that the break was needed. “The break was right there. I’m just looking forward to just putting good games together, putting good at-bats together.”

Alonso will rejoin Las Vegas on Monday, though, so this will be a very fast-paced experience for him, but certainly a worthwhile one.
