New York Mets first base prospect Peter Alonso homered, double and knocked in two runs on Thursday night for the Triple-A Las Vegas 51s. The slugging Alonso becomes the first player (MiLB or MLB) to break the 100 RBI barrier in the 2018 season.
Alonso, 23, has been on fire since returning from the MLB Futures Game, in 23 games during that span he’s hitting .316/.368/.705 with eight doubles, triple, nine home runs and 32 RBI.
The big right-hander is bouncing back after a miserable slump to start his Triple-A career and is now slashing .251/.350/.556 for Vegas. He began the year by breaking out with a 1.012 OPS in 65 games for Double-A Binghamton.
He has 23 doubles, 28 home runs and 101 RBI on the season in 391 at-bats.
Baseball America currently has Alonso ranked as their No. 72 prospect in baseball and MLB Pipeline has him at No. 63.
Questions still remain about his defense at first base which is below average, but at some point soon the Mets should see what they have in the talented hitter at the big league level.
