As I posted last night, Newsday’s Ken Davidoff confirmed that the Mets met with the representatives for free agent RHP Frank Francisco.
Marc Carig of the Star-Ledger is reporting that Sandy Alderson also met with the representative for reliever Matt Capps.
Last season with the Minnesota Twins, relief pitcher Matt Capps went 4-7 with 15 saves and a 4.25 ERA.
The Mets GM has made revamping of the bullpen one of his top priorities this offseason after seeing the bullpen fall apart after the trade of closer Francisco Rodriguez.
“One of the reasons it didn’t go well the last couple of months is that nobody really stepped in for Frankie when he left,” Alderson said.
Carig says that “the Mets intend to cast a wide net in their search for bullpen help”, and Alderson feels confident that “things are starting to take some shape.”
He did not dismiss the possibility that he could take another chance on Jason Isringhausen, “he’s a possibility,” Alderson said.
“You look at our pen from last year, we didn’t have an abundance of really good arms. We need to develop more of those guys out of the system. We have some that are coming.”
It looks like most of the spending this offseason will be in the bullpen aside from the Reyes situation. Alderson wants two veteran arms that are solid and reliable.
