Astros’ starter Justin Verlander struck out 11 over six innings of one-run ball to lead the Astros to a Game 1 win over the Yankees. The Astros got three solo home runs from Yuli Gurriel, Chas McCormick, and Jeremy Peña to beat the Yankees 4-2.

Right-hander Luis Severino (0-0, 4.76 ERA) looks to even the series for the Yankees. Severino allowed three runs in 5 2/3 innings during his start against the Guardians in the Division Series. The 28-year-old allowed five runs in 12 innings (3.75 ERA) over two starts vs the Astros in the 2022 regular season.

The Astros will counter with groundball specialist Framber Valdez (0-0, 3.18 ERA). The left-hander gave up two runs in 5 2/3 innings vs the Mariners in the previous round of the playoffs. Valdez allowed three runs in six innings in his only start against the Yankees this season.
