It’s easy to be upset about this weekend’s results against the Miami Marlins, but truthfully it is a long season.
I know it’s said ad nauseum, it doesn’t make it sting any less and you probably don’t want to hear it, but it’s not time to throw on your parka’s for the winter or book a flight to Panic City.
Realistically, the Mets had a chance to sweep the Marlins in four games this weekend. We all know that. Even on Sunday when the Mets didn’t register a hit until two outs in the eighth inning, momentum swung their way when Asdrubal Cabrera knocked in a pair to tie the game in the ninth inning.
It didn’t propel us to victory, though, which happens in this game.
“If you win 10 in a row and lose one, it’s disappointing,” said closer Addison Reed after Sunday’s loss. “But what are we, [13] games in? We’ve still got a long way to go. We’ll be fine.”
Did anyone else foresee J.T. Riddle taking Addison Reed deep to dead center to win it for Miami? Should Jerry Blevins have been brought in to face Christian Yelich on Saturday? Did the Mets go to the well too many times on Friday which proved to be their downfall? Should Jose Reyes be benched and Michael Conforto starting?
These are valid questions and sound reasons to be upset, but if it’s any solace, the Mets have off Monday, meaning the whole team can collectively rest before returning home for Tuesday’s series with the Phillies.
There are a lot of negatives to take away from the Marlins series and first few weeks of the season that seem magnified right now, but you’re going to lose games and you’re going to lose series. Every team does and every team will again.
While it’s cause for concern that Terry Collins bullies his bullpen and the offense is either red hot or ice cold, it will even out. This is a talented group of players and it’s only April.
“These were high-leverage games, close games the entire series,” second baseman Neil Walker said. “These are games that are going to make us stronger over the course of the season.”
Take a step back from the ledge and realize that this one series won’t make or break us. 10 out of our next 16 games are against the Phillies and Braves who the Mets can and should beat into the ground. They will work out their kinks and appropriate additions will be made throughout the season to complement our current players. Sandy Alderson does it every year.
The Mets will always drive us crazy, but they wouldn’t be the Mets if they didn’t. It’s what you get into when you choose the blue and orange. LGM.
