Yesterday John Heyman of SI reported that Stan Kasten resigned as President of the Washington Nationals. Kasten along with John Schuerholz and Bobby Cox were hired by Ted Turner and in the late 80’s began to rebuild the Atlanta Braves, turning it into the franchise which from 1991 to 2005 won an unprecedented 14 consecutive division titles.
Officially Kasten stated he’s resigning for “personal reasons” however speculation was growing that he was becoming uneasy with the Nationals ownerships’ budget frugality.
Interesting development to say the least and if the Wilpons are serious about changing the structure of the Mets franchise, hiring someone with the history and gravitas of Stan Kasten along with a solid General Manager of the likes of a John Hart or Josh Byrnes, or even the up and coming Jerry DiPoto, could usher in a potential new era for the Metropolitans.
Of course this may very well be a “pie-in-the-sky” fantasy but you just never know.
