Morning Briefing: MLB Postseason Begins

Good morning, Mets fans!

The MLB postseason began Tuesday, with four games to kick off the Wild Card series in both leagues.

The Braves beat the Phillies 5-3 behind a Austin Riley go-ahead three-run homer off Jhoan Duran in the eighth inning. J.T. Realmuto had given Philadelphia a 3-2 lead with a two-run triple in the seventh.

The White Sox defeated the Astros 6-3 after jumping out to an early 5-0 lead. Colson Montgomery homered, and Sam Antonacci drove in two runs as Chicago’s bullpen held off a late Houston rally.

The Yankees beat the Red Sox 9-0. Ben Rice hit two homers, including a grand slam that put the icing on the cake.

To cap the night, the Padres won 8-0 over the Cubs. Michael King brought a no-hitter into the seventh and ended up going seven one-hit innings. Joe Musgrove closed it out in his first MLB appearance in nearly two years.

Games continue in the best-of-three series at 2, 5, 8 and 10 p.m. ET Wednesday.

Cleon Jones, now 84, had no problem making the trip to New York to attend Howie Rose’s retirement ceremony (which was eventually postponed). Jones said he wanted to be there to honor Rose, who has called the 1969 championship team his favorite Mets club, and was happy to show his support. It was confirmed on Tuesday by Jack Curry of YES Network that Aaron Judge will not have a place on the Yankees’ Wild Card roster.

Garrett Crochet returned to Boston’s Wild Card roster after missing more than five months with a shoulder injury and is expected to pitch in relief. Philadelphia left injured trade-deadline acquisition Luis Arraez off its Wild Card roster and will carry three catchers. The Phillies excluded former Met Brooks Raley from their Wild Card roster.

Former Met Freddy Peralta was the September American League Player of the Month.

Veteran closer Liam Hendriks announced his retirement on Tuesday. Hendriks, a 14-year veteran, made it to three All-Star games and won two Rivera Rewards for the best reliever in the American League.
