Per Joel Sherman of the New York Post the San Diego Padres have checked in on trading for Kodai Senga. San Diego previously pursued Senga when he was a free agent before the 2022 season.
Senga is owed $4.7 million for the remainder of 2026 and $14 million for 2027. He has struggled in 2026 to an 8.66 ERA but has shown flashes of being a strong starting pitcher in the past.
For example, Senga was an All-Star in his debut season in North America in 2023. He posted a 2.98 ERA and struck out 202 over 166 1/3 innings. After missing a majority of 2024 due to injury, Senga posted a 3.02 ERA in another injury-riddled 2025 season.
Senge transitioned back into a starting role after Freddy Peralta was scratched for trade-related reasonings. He tossed three strong innings against the Miami Marlins on July 31 before unraveling in the fourth inning.
It is unclear if the Mets would need to eat a portion of his contract or take back a player under contract from the Padres.
The trade deadline is Monday, August 4. Expect the action to pick up in the hours leading up to the 6:00 pm ET deadline.
