The Mets are still, somehow, finding new ways to lose. The Mets went 3-4 last week, ending the week by getting swept by the Boston Red Sox. Sloppy play in the field helped the Red Sox clinch that sweep. There were some positive takeaways on both sides. However, the Mets are still looking very dysfunctional.

Offensive Player of the Week: Juan Soto
Despite some poor defense last week, Soto had a consistent week at the plate again. Soto slashed .182/.387/.591 with an OPS of .978. Although his batting average was a bit low, when he was making contact, he was slugging. Soto hit three home runs with eight RBIs. Soto was a main catalyst for the Mets’ win on Monday. He smashed a three-run home run in the top of the ninth. That helped give the Mets the lead, and the Mets eventually were able to close out the game in extra innings, 7-6.

Christian Scott by Berto Carlo
Pitcher of the Week: Christian Scott
Scott looked good on the mound in his start against the Royals on Wednesday. He pitched five solid innings, only allowed three hits and struck out five. He maintained a low exit velocity against, with an average of 85.8 MPH to the 19 total batters he faced. He also induced a 46.2% ground ball rate, so nearing almost 50% for the balls in play is a positive sign for Scott.

A.J. Ewing by Berto Carlo
Honorable Mention: A.J. Ewing
A.J. Ewing has been seeing the ball very well at the plate. Last week, he slashed .333/.375/.600 with an OPS of .975. His short, compact swing resulted in two home runs and driving in four RBIs. He also plays a solid center field, with Baseball Savant ranking his arm strength in the 89th percentile for the season. While it is difficult to be enthused about the Mets this year, Ewing is something to be excited about as he can be a core component of the Mets’ outfield for many years to come.

The All-Star break. The Mets are sending one lone player to the All-Star game, Juan Soto. Makes sense as he is the only Met that has been consistently playing well in the first half of the year. Following the break, the Mets take on the Phillies in Philadelphia. The Phillies are in second in the N.L. East, only trailing the Braves by two games. This will be a tough matchup for the Mets.
