After dropping game one to the Cubs on Tuesday night, along with the matinee’ matchup on Wednesday, the Mets were looking to avoid losing the series and being swept in the doubleheader at Citi Field.
The Mets started their lefty Sean Manaea (1-2, 4.87 ERA, 60 SO) in game two against the Cubs’ lefty Shota Imanaga (4-6, 4.40 ERA, 88 SO).
The Mets played the game of long-ball all day while the Cubs played small ball, put the ball in play, and with a lot of help from six Mets errors, the Cubs came out on top big 10-5 to sweep the doubleheader and win the series.
It was a very sloppy night in the field for the Mets as they did themselves no favors when it came to how this game was lost. Their six errors from the infield tied a team record and each infielder had an error for only the second time in franchise history.
The Cubs struck first in the top of the second as back-to-back doubles to lead off the inning scored Nico Hoerner to give them an early 1-0 lead.
The Mets answered right back and took their first lead of the day in the bottom half of the second and all three runs came on behalf of the long ball. Francisco Alvarez stayed hot and hit a home run to give New York their first run of the day. That was his second home run of the day as he hit one this afternoon as well and his third home run in two days.
Following Alvarez, after Wagaman reached on a single A.J. Ewing homered to make it a 3-1 Mets lead.
The Cubs re-took the lead in the fourth. Hoerner doubled for a second time and after the second Mets error of the day allowed Carson Kelly to reach and advanced Hoerner to third Pedro Ramirez hit an RBI single that made it 3-2.
Manaea followed with a wild pitch that moved both runners up 90 feet and Dansby Swanson, then Pete Crow-Armstrong took advantage with RBI singles each to make it a 4-3 tie game.
That was all for Manaea as Carlos Mendoza went to his bullpen, bringing in long reliever Huascar Brazoban to replace Manaea. Brazabon struck out the first three batters he faced to get the Mets out of it.
Mark Vientos tied things back up in the bottom half with a solo shot to center field that made it an exciting 4-4 game.
But that lead didn’t last long either as in the top of the sixth, Ramirez once again doubled and was driven in on Swanson’s second triple of the year to make it 5-4. Later in the inning with a runner on Matt Show drove in a run on a force out from second to first to put the Cubs up by two (6-4).
Bo Bichette got a run back for New York in the bottom of the inning as he stayed hot and hit a solo home run to bring the Mets within one, 6-5.
The Cubs then got one more back in the seventh, but it was given to them as the Mets committed their fifth error of the day that allowed Crow-Armstrong to reach and a run to score to make it 7-5.
They extended that lead even further in the eighth, scoring three more runs. Hoerner hit his third double of the day in the inning, Kelly reached on an error for the second time on what was the Mets’ sixth error of the day, and back-to-back singles by Ramirez and Swanson made it a 10-5 game as the Cubs went on to sweep the doubleheader and take the series win.
Players of the Game
