The Mets found a way to beat the Marlins.
MJ Melendez stunned Miami with a two-run, walk-off homer in the 10th inning on an 0-2 pitch from Pete Fairbanks to give the Mets a 9-7 victory at Citi Field. Austin Warren (1-1) stranded the free runner with a perfect 10th to earn the win.

Last weekend, the Mets couldn’t score (two runs in three games) as they were swept by the Marlins. On Friday, New York’s offense showed up but the pitching was uneven.
Six days ago, the Mets managed just one hit off of Max Meyer over seven scoreless innings in Miami. On Friday, New York (24-33) scored four runs on three hits off Meyer in the first. A.J. Ewing and Brett Baty each connected for two-run singles. Mark Vientos smacked a 445-foot homer in the third, the second-longest blast of his career.
Marcus Semien made a trip around the bases with the help of sloppy defense in the fourth. (He reached second when the left fielder booted his single. He scored when the catcher threw the ball into left trying to nail him at third after a bunt.)
Freddy Peralta (seven hits, one walk, five strikeouts) failed to take advantage of the run support. He gave up a run each in the third and fourth and two more in the fifth. He was chased when Kyle Stowers doubled in a run to make it 6-4. A.J. Minter struck out Jakob Marsee to end the fifth.
Like Peralta, the bullpen was shaky overall. The Mets used six relievers. Minter, Brooks Raley, Luke Weaver and Warren posted scoreless outings.
But Huascar Brazobán yielded a run on a walk, a double and a sacrifice fly and Tobias Myers gave up a game-tying two-run homer to Owen Caissie in the eighth. Devin Williams was unavailable after throwing 34 pitches on Wednesday.
Stats of the Game
The Mets are 7-4 in extra-inning games. It was the second walk-off homer for New York this season. Luis Robert Jr. hit the first.
WPIX posted a graphic showing how the length of starting pitchers’ outings have declined over the last 50 years. The percentage of starters who went 6+ innings was 68 percent in 1976; 64 percent in 1986; 60 percent in 1996; 59 percent in 2006; 54 percent in 2016; and this season it was 37 percent entering Friday.
Meyer gave up a season-high five earned runs and the four in the first equaled the most he’d given up in a game all season. His ERA jumped from 2.52 to 2.97.
Player of the Game
Walk-off hero Melendez, who entered the game in a 5-for-45 slump dating to May 1, added a sacrifice fly in the seventh to make it 7-5. It was his first RBI since April 30. That was also the last time he homered.
On Deck
Bobby Valentine, 76, and Lee Mazzilli, 71, will be inducted into the Mets Hall of Fame Saturday during pre-game ceremonies. As for the game, Christian Scott (0-0, 3.20 ERA) will take his 16th shot at his first career win. Tyler Phillips (0-0, 1.07 ERA), who threw 3 2/3 scoreless innings against the Mets last Sunday, goes for Miami. The game is at 4:10 p.m. ET and it will air on SNY.
