It looks like there’s a bug going on in the New York Mets locker room. David Peterson had to leave a start because he wasn’t feeling well. Then Jesse Winker missed a few games due to an illness. Now the illness bug has hit another starting pitcher, Griffin Canning.

Manager Carlos Mendoza announced that Canning will miss his scheduled start on Wednesday against the Minnesota Twins due to an illness. Due to this, Jose Siri, who suffered a fractured tibia after hitting a foul ball off his leg, has yet to be placed on the injured list. The Mets will decide on who will take Canning’s spot after Tuesday night’s game, amid a series of moves expected to happen.
As for options on who will start Wednesday afternoon’s finale in Minnesota, Brandon Sproat won’t be called up because he already pitched last Saturday. Right-hander Justin Hagenman is currently scheduled to pitch for the Syracuse Mets on Wednesday, and he’s on the 40-man roster, so he could be called up to take Canning’s spot. However, the Mets are already at their pitcher limit of 13 for the 26-man roster, so they’ll have to option a pitcher if they’re going to call up another to start in Canning’s place. Expect a flurry of moves on Wednesday.
So far, Canning has pitched decently for the Mets in the absence of Sean Manaea and Frankie Montas. In his first three starts, Canning has a 4.20 ERA in 15 innings with 13 strikeouts and a 1.533 WHIP.
