The weather couldn’t stop the New York Mets from rolling as they took their fourth in a row and swept the Toronto Blue Jays 2-1. With the victory, the Mets now sit at 6-3 on the season and start the home season with a bang.
David Peterson got the start for the Mets and, despite struggling with his command, limited Toronto to just one run over 4 2/3 innings, striking out three and walking five while allowing three hits. He exited in the fifth with nausea, attempting to stay in after exacerbating it, but his control faltered, resulting in a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch.
Max Kranick came in to relieve Peterson and maintained his strong form, tossing 1 1/3 innings with one strikeout. So far this season, Kranick has retired 22 of the 23 batters he’s faced.
Reed Garrett, A.J. Minter, and Edwin Díaz combined with Kranick to shut down the Blue Jays’ offense, throwing 4 1/3 scoreless innings out of the bullpen and allowing just one hit. The bullpen as a whole continues to impress with its consistency. Minter picked up the hold, while Díaz earned the save despite plunking two batters in the top of the ninth inning.
The offense wasn’t explosive but did just enough to scratch out two runs against a tough Bowden Francis. Pete Alonso drove in Hayden Senger, who had singled earlier, to make it 1-0. They added another run when Brandon Nimmo hit a sacrifice fly to bring home Juan Soto, who once again reached base despite not producing much.
The Mets left seven men on base and went 1-for-5 with runners in scoring position.
Statistic of the Game: Mets Bullpen
The Mets are getting elite production from their bullpen, which has become their strong suit this season. After tossing 4 1/3 scoreless innings out of the bullpen, today’s performance brings the Mets bullpen ERA to a strong 1.29, which is the best in baseball.
Player of the Game: Pete Alonso
Pete Alonso continued his strong start to the season, by driving in the Mets first run of the game, a hard ground ball base hit that flew past Blue Jays shortstop Bo Bichette. So far, Alonso has a slash line of .290/.421/1.066 with three home runs and 11 RBIs in 31 at-bats. He went 2-for-3 on Sunday.
