Opening Day is upon us. Here’s a look at the crew that Carlos Mendoza will hope to guide back to the playoffs in his second year as manager. The season begins Thursday in Houston. (Last year’s stats are in parentheses.)
CATCHERS
Luis Torrens – He caught an impressive 13 of 28 runners attempting to steal last season, which would have led MLB if he had the attempts to qualify. (.229/.292/.373, 3 HR, 130 PA)
Hayden Senger – The 27-year-old will make his MLB debut after six seasons and 1,351 at-bats in the minor leagues. The Mets selected him in the 24th round of the 2018 draft out of Miami University of Ohio. (Triple-A Syracuse .252/.323/.401, 3 HR, 166 PA)
INFIELDERS
Pete Alonso – He’s back for a seventh year in orange and blue after a free agency process that dragged into February. Can he pick up where he left off in October when he hit four postseason homers, including one of the most dramatic in team history? (.240/.329/.459, 34 HR, 88 RBI, 162 G, 695 PA)
Brett Baty – He gets another chance to prove his worth as an everyday player, this time at second base. He was a beast in spring training (four homers, .353/.441/.745/1.186 in 59 PA), but can he do it when the games count? (Mets: .229/.306/.327, 4 HR, 171 PA; Syracuse: .252/.349/.504, 16 HR, 269 PA)
Luisangel Acuña – He provided a spark when called upon in September to fill in for an injured Francisco Lindor and kept it going in the Venezuelan Winter League (.337/.419/.495, 3 HR, 18 SB, 119 PA). He went 13-for-52 (.250) with a double and three steals this spring. (Mets: .308/.325/.641, 3 HR, 40 PA; Syracuse: .258/.299/.355, 7 HR, 40 SB, 587 PA)
Francisco Lindor – He’s won two Silver Sluggers with the Mets and finished top 10 in the MVP voting three times, including a second-place finish last year. Is this the year he makes his first All-Star Game appearance as a Met? A good start to the season would help. (.273/.344/.500, 33 HR, 91 RBI, 29 SB, 689 PA)
Mark Vientos – He hit a stunning 27 homers last year after failing to make the Opening Day roster and added five more bombs in the playoffs. (.266/.322/.516, 27 HR, 71 RBI, 454 PA)
OUTFIELDERS
Brandon Nimmo – He has 32 career triples and turns 32 on Opening Day. With a pair of triples, he will pass Cleon Jones for fourth in team history. (He needs 82 to pass Jose Reyes for first.) (.224/.327/.399, 23 HR, 90 RBI, 15 SB, 663 PA)
Jose Siri -His 2024 fielding run value was in the 99th percentile, per Baseball Savant. So was his sprint speed. His whiff percentage, K percentage, and squared up percentage were all in the 1st percentile. He should be entertaining. (.187/.255/.366, 18 HR, 14 SB, 448 PA)
Juan Soto – He scored 128 runs last year, which would set a franchise record if he did it again. The 7.9 bWAR he posted would be fourth all time. His home run total would tie for third and the OPS would be fourth, a little better than 2006 Carlos Beltran. (.288/.419/.569, 41 HR, 109 RBI, 7 SB, 713 PA)
Jesse Winker – He has three triples in 2,364 career regular-season at-bats. (Yes, again with triples trivia.) He had two triples for the Mets in the 2024 playoffs. Expect him to get the majority of the starts at designated hitter. (.253/.360/.405, 14 HR, 14 SB, 508 PA)
Starling Marte – The 36-year-old will get the short side of the DH platoon. He hit .310/.384/.460 vs. lefties a year ago. (.269/.327/.388, 7 HR, 16 SB, 370 PA)
Tyrone Taylor – He is the only player to ever homer off Luis Guillorme. (.248/.299/.401, 7 HR, 11 SB, 345 PA)
STARTING ROTATION
Clay Holmes – It was a promising spring (2 ER in 19.2 IP) for the former long-time Yankee reliever who will get the ball on Opening Day, his first start since 2018 for the Pirates. (3-5, 3.14 ERA, 1.30 WHIP, 30 SV, 63 IP)
Kodai Senga – The 32-year-old will reportedly be on a pitch count of about 75 to start the season after injuries limited him to one regular season start a year ago. (2023 stats: 12-7, 2.98 ERA, 1.22 WHIP, 202 K, 166.1 IP)
David Peterson – The lefty will look to build on his 2024, when he set career marks in bWAR, ERA, wins and IP. (10-3, 2.90 ERA, 1.28 WHIP, 101 K, 121 IP)
Griffin Canning – In five seasons with the Angels, he was 25-34 with a 4.78 ERA and 1.33 WHIP. He led the American League in earned runs allowed last year and coughed up 31 homers. He had an excellent spring with 22 Ks in 14.1 IP and a 1.88 ERA. (6-13, 5.19 ERA, 1.39 WHIP, 130 K, 171.1 IP)
Tylor Megill – It was a wild ride last year. He was hurt, sent down to the minors and clutch in September. (4-5, 4.04 ERA, 1.30 WHIP, 91 K, 78 IP)
BULLPEN
Edwin Díaz – The hope is he can rediscover his dominant 2022 pre-injury form, when he had 118 strikeouts in 62 innings, made the All-Star team and placed ninth in Cy Young voting. (6-4, 3.52 ERA, 1.04 WHIP, 20 SV, 84 K, 53.2 IP)
A.J. Minter – It’s always nice to sign a quality lefty, even nicer when it’s from a division rival. (5-4, 2.62 ERA, 1.01 WHIP, 35 K, 34.1 IP)
Ryne Stanek – He was shaky (6.06 ERA) in 16.1 IP with the Mets after coming over from Seattle at the trade deadline, but mostly good (3 ER, 8 K, 3 BB, 8 IP) in the playoffs. (7-3, 4.88 ERA, 1.31 WHIP, 67 K, 55.1 IP)
Reed Garrett – It was a breakout 2024 for the 32-year-old, who emerged as a key member of the bullpen after never throwing more than 19.2 IP in his three previous seasons. (8-5, 3.77 ERA, 1.39 WHIP, 83 K, 57.1 IP)
José Buttó – With seven starts and 30 appearances a year ago, he did whatever was asked of him in 2024. He may find himself in the same role this year. (7-3, 2.55 ERA, 1.06 WHIP, 79 K, 74 IP)
Danny Young – The lefty may have found a home in New York after throwing just 14.2 IP combined during stops in Seattle and Atlanta. (4-1, 4.54 ERA, 1.24 WHIP, 48 K, 37.2 IP)
Huascar Brazobán – The 35-year-old was reliable with the Marlins last year (2.93 ERA, 1.01 WHIP, 34 K, 30.2 IP), then unreliable for the Mets (5.14 ERA, 1.52 WHIP, 17 K, 21 IP) after they traded minor league infielder Wilfredo Lara for him at the deadline.
Max Kranick – He earned a roster spot with a stellar spring (2 ER, 12.1 IP, 15 K, 1 BB). With his career interrupted by a variety of injuries, he will be looking to make his first MLB appearance since 2022 with the Pirates.
