Former Mets captain David Wright donned the orange and blue once again Wednesday. The longtime stalwart third baseman was the latest team alumnus to make his way to Port St. Lucie, and for the first time, in uniform as an instructor.
“I feel more comfortable in (the uniform) for sure,” Wright said, saying this was probably his first time in a Met jersey since his famous farewell game in 2018.
One major storyline in Metland this spring has been Francisco Lindor’s potential captaincy. As the last Met to hold that title, Wright said the team has a bevy of options.
“I think this is the best problem you can have,” Wright said, “Francisco Lindor is one of my favorite players…but I think you can make a case for a number of guys in there.”

Wright also sang the praises of one of those players who was at a time a teammate of his.
“I’ve obviously got a great relationship with (Brandon Nimmo), so it’s just really neat to come back and see Nimms as a leader on the team, when I remember him as a young pup.”
Wright participated in the coaches’ meeting in addition to his role on the practice field, and when asked about the team’s state, he expressed some envy.
“I wish I could be a part of this lineup,” Wright said. And when asked, ‘where he would hit in the lineup?’ Wright took the oportunity to do some well-mannered needling towards another former Mets captain.
“They put the best hitter at what, second or third now?” Wright said with a grin, “That was kind of what I was thinking there, what would Keith (Hernandez) say to this question.”
