Luisangel Acuña hasn’t missed a step since the major league season ended. The 22-year-old homered, walked twice, stole a base, and scored three runs for Cardenales de Lara in the Venezuelan Winter League on Wednesday night.

Acuña is now hitting .359/.447/.516 with two homers, 12 RBIs, and 19 runs scored across 77 plate appearances. He’s also stolen 14 bases without getting caught and has a solid 9% walk rate, up from his 5.4% mark in Triple-A this year.

“When he came to the team, I sent him a message to have fun because he deserved to play in the major leagues, no one gave it to him as a gift,” Carlos Mendoza said to LVBP.com. “I have seen him grow.”

If Acuña plays the rest of the season for Lara, he will be eligible for the LVBP Rookie of the Year award. Despite playing in just 19 games, Acuña is second in the league in stolen bases. Acuña is also eligible for Rookie of the Year in MLB for the 2025 season, since he registered just 40 plate appearances in the majors in 2024.
