The Mets (61-58) struggled out of the gate in their homestand, losing the opener to Oakland (51-69) by a score of 9-4. Coming off a tough series against the Mariners, where they managed just one run in 27 innings, the Mets’ offensive struggles continued despite collecting nine hits. They left 11 runners on base and went just 4-for-17 with runners in scoring position.

(Box Score)

Paul Blackburn had a rough outing against his former team, surrendering seven runs (six earned) over four innings. He allowed six hits, walked two, and struck out four, throwing 82 pitches — only 48 for strikes — and ultimately took the loss.

The trouble started early for Blackburn, who walked the first batter he faced and later gave up a bases-clearing double with two outs in the first inning.

In the bottom of the second inning, J.D. Martinez took a 100 mph heater to his elbow, eventually exiting with a left elbow contusion. The Mets did respond to Oakland’s quick start with an RBI single from Jose Iglesias to cut the lead to 3-1, but Blackburn’s struggles continued. In the fourth inning, he gave up a single and walked a batter before a fielder’s choice brought home a run. A three-run homer by Shea Langeliers extended Oakland’s lead to 7-1.

New York showed signs of life in the fifth, scoring three runs off a Jesse Winker RBI double and a two-RBI single from Pete Alonso, who snapped an 0-for-15 skid to cut the deficit to 7-4.

Jose Butto entered in relief in the fifth but couldn’t quiet Oakland’s bats. Despite escaping damage thanks to a successful challenge on a close play at the plate, the A’s tacked on two more runs in the sixth to push their lead to 9-4.

Ryne Stanek, Phil Maton, and Edwin Díaz tossed an inning in relief. Mark Vientos drew a two-out walk in the ninth, but the club could not rally, dropping the first of the three-game series.
