There is momentum toward a deal but Major League Baseball and the Major League Baseball Players Association are still apart in a few areas.
With two hours to go until MLB’s second deadline, time is running out for a deal to get done without the cancellation of any games. Although if they are close there’s reason to think they’ll just move the deadline back until later tonight.
The sides went back and forth until the early morning on Tuesday with reporters tracking movement by the sides each time they met. At one time there was a belief they would work through the night to figure out the Collective Bargaining Agreement but they decided to take a break and make the final adjustments on Tuesday.
MLB still wants to figure out a way for an international draft to rake place and is proposing it. It would be a major give by the Players Association.
MLB is also willing to drop direct draft pick compensation for free agents. Essentially eliminating the compensatory pick teams receive for losing a player they gave a qualifying offer to.
Another area they’re separate on is a draft lottery. MLB is currently sitting at five picks on it.
There are more important things that have been agreed upon and still need to be.
The two sides have agreed with the union’s proposal for a 12-team playoff, rather than the 14-team playoff the owners wanted. Players are also willing to concede on their request for expanded arbitration eligibility. MLB has raised its monetary offers on the competitive balance tax, minimum salary, and a new pre-arbitration bonus pool.
MLB is willing to keep the tax rates with the CBT (the penalties teams pay for exceeding them). That was a major point of contention.
As of right now the CBT as MLB proposed it will be set at $220 million from 2022-24 and raise to $224 million in 2025 and $230 million in 2026.
The sides have met in person once on Tuesday where the players made a proposal back to the league. In it the players union lowered their bonus pool ask to under $100 million, says Jon Heyman. MLB currently sits at $25 million for the bonus pool.
