Mets ace Jacob deGrom continues to try to return to the mound during the 2021 season after a series of injuries has caused him to miss significant time. His current injury –the Mets called it right forearm tightness–has held him out since July 7, when he pitched seven innings against the Brewers.
Mets president Sandy Alderson told reporters earlier this week that deGrom had a small sprain (tear) in his right elbow that had resolved itself. Alderson went on to say that the two-time Cy Young winner’s elbow was “perfectly intact” now as he continues to throw.
DeGrom briefly talked to reporters on Thursday before the Mets dropped a 3-2 heartbreaker in Miami to the Marlins. “I know what was said, but my ligament is perfectly fine…I’ve been throwing. So I don’t think, you know, I wouldn’t be throwing if I had a compromised ligament. That’s the plan, to continue to throw and build up and see where we end up. And that’s all I’m going to say.”
DeGrom has been playing catch for two weeks and the hope is that he will soon throw off a mound, though the Mets have yet to announce a date for that.
The 33-year-old was having a season for the record books before the injury, he has a 1.08 ERA, 0.55 WHIP, 146 strikeouts, and a 5.1 WAR in 92 innings this year.
