Noah Syndergaard will begin a rehab assignment on Thursday with High-A Brooklyn. The plan is for him to throw one inning.

The 28-year-old hasn’t thrown for the Mets in two years since Tommy John surgery. The long path of rehab will now loop through the Cyclones as he works his way to becoming a reliever for the rest of the season.

Earlier this season, Syndergaard made two appearances for New York’s Low-A affiliate the St. Lucie Mets. He threw four innings and 65 pitches his first start and was pulled early from his second start after 16. His velocity was noticeably down.

Syndergaard was then shut down for six weeks with right elbow inflammation on May 27. On August 8 he was spotted throwing off a mound in Philadelphia. He threw live at-bats to teammates Francisco Lindor and Javier Baez during the Mets’ recent west coast trip.

Syndergaard threw a side session on Tuesday and felt good afterward according to Luis Rojas.

In addition to Syndergaard, the Mets received good news on Jacob deGrom. deGrom’s most recent MRI came back clean and was cleared to play catch. Both are hoping for September returns.
