In the latest setback for injured Mets, J.D. Davis still isn’t swinging a bat after feeling soreness in his injured left hand last weekend.

Davis returned to New York on Tuesday for “treatment,” and though further evaluations didn’t reveal any new structural damage, the pain hasn’t fully subsided. He hopes to start swinging a bat again this weekend and is currently taking it “day-by-day.”

The third baseman said he is “dying of boredom” while waiting for his injury to heal, and today he’s spending time going through scouting reports to help the active squad.

Davis originally started a rehab assignment one week ago, but a stiff neck made him sit out Sunday’s game. He wasn’t in Tuesday’s Syracuse lineup, and then it was revealed he was returning to New York.

The 28-year-old was one of the Mets’ best hitters before spraining his hand on May 1–the same day as Brandon Nimmo. He was slashing .390/.476/.610 before the injury.

Davis’s news was announced after Luis Rojas said the Mets were shutting down Noah Syndergaard for six weeks due to right elbow inflammation. The team is really struggling to get healthy right now after putting as many as 17 players on the injured list.
