The New York Mets will try to bounce back after last night’s underwhelming loss. The game was going fine for the Mets for the first couple of innings, but things melted down in the fourth, between defensive miscues, Taijuan Walker losing the strike zone and getting squeezed by the umpire.
Walker ended up walking in run to end his night. All told he allowed three runs, but only two were earned, as J.D. Davis made a throwing error that allowed the Cubs to score.
The Mets bats were like the weather – cold.
J.D. Davis hit a solo homer for the Mets only run, but his two throwing errors led to runs for the Cubs, so it was a wash. There was good news for the Mets though – the bullpen held the game together and while it’s unfortunate that the Mets bats couldn’t take advantage of that, it’s good to see the bullpen pitching effectively.
Jacob Barnes bounced back from his performance last Sunday and pitched two scoreless innings. Jeurys Familia added in a scoreless inning and Trevor May had a perfect inning.

David Peterson will take the mound for the Mets today, making his first start against the Cubs. On the season he has allowed seven runs over 10 innings from 10 hits and two walks, while striking out 15 batters.
For Peterson this year has been the story of two starts. There’s his first start where he allowed six runs over four innings, where he had a bad first inning and the bullpen allowed inherited runners to score after he left. Then there was his last start, where he held the Phillies to one run over six innings while striking out 10.
There are no members of the Cubs who have seen Peterson in a major league game.
The Mets batters will try to find themselves tonight against Zach Davies. Davies was drafted by the Orioles and traded him to the Brewers for Gerardo Parra in 2015. He pitched for the Brewers through the 2019 season, when traded to the Padres. This offseason he was part of the trade for Yu Darvish.
So far this season, Davies has allowed 13 runs from 16 hits and nine walks over 11 1/3 innings (3 starts, 10.32 ERA, 5.19 FIP, 2.206 WHIP, 38 ERA+). This is a pretty stark departure from his numbers last year where he pitched 69 1/3 innings over 12 starts with a 2.73 ERA, 3.88 FIP, 1.067 WHIP, and a 150 ERA+. The Mets have the following numbers against him:
- Brandon Nimmo 3-6, 2 2B, 3B, K
- Kevin Pillar 2-7, HR, 3 K
- James McCann 1-2
- Michael Conforto 2-10, 2 2B, 5 BB, 2 K
- Tomas Nido 1-3, K
- Albert Almora Jr. 3-12, 2B, 2 K
- Jeff McNeil 0-1
- Pete Alonso 0-3
Game Notes:
- Brandon Nimmo isn’t starting tonight because he is experiencing some soreness in his right hip. He is however available off the bench.
- Mets pitchers have struck out 119 in 97.1 innings this season which equates to a 11.00 strikeout per nine ratio.
- The team’s 11.00 mark is the second-best in the majors and the best in the NL.
- J.D. Davis has homered in four consecutive games against the Cubs, which equals the longest streak in Mets
history, done one other time in the regular season (Butch Huskey, 1997-1998) and again by Daniel Murphy in the 2015 NLCS. - The last player to hit a home run in five consecutive games vs. the Cubs was Matt Carpenter.
- As a team, the Mets pinch hitters are batting .286/.412/.357 with a double, an RBI and two walks this season.
