The Los Angeles Angels announced on Wednesday that they have claimed former Robel Garcia off of waivers. Garcia was designated for assignment by the Mets on February 1 to make room for Jordan Yamamoto, who the Mets claimed from the Miami Marlins in the trade that sent shortstop Federico Polanco to the Marlins.
In July of 2020, Garcia was claimed by the Cincinnati Reds off of waivers from the Chicago Cubs and was assigned to the Reds’ alternate training site, where he spent the majority of the 2020 season. Garcia bounced back and forth from the alternate site and major league team between August and September. He was then claimed off of waivers in October by the Mets.
Garcia spent the 2019 season with the Chicago Cubs, where he played in 31 games and hit .208/.275 /.500, with a .775 OPS. He hit two doubles, two triples, five home runs, and had seven RBI’s at the major league level with the Cubs.
Prior to being added to the Cubs’ active roster in 2019, Garcia split his time between the Tennessee Smokies (AA) and Iowa Cubs (AAA).
With Tennessee, Garcia hit .295/.391/.590, with a .981 OPS, collecting five doubles, six home runs, and 26 RBI’s in 22 games played. At the Triple-A level in Iowa, Garcia hit .281/.361/.585 with a .946 OPS, collecting 12 doubles, two triples, 21 home runs, 52 RBI’s, and 30 BB in 76 games played.
