On Friday, Jared Porter and Sandy Alderson both spoke on WFAN and each specifically stated that the Mets are interested in acquiring a left-handed reliever.
When looking at the Mets’ bullpen situation, this makes sense, as the best left-handed option there right now is Stephen Tarpley or Daniel Zamora.
Earlier this offseason, Alderson mentioned Brad Hand as someone who could be a fit. There have been multiple reports that Hand and the Mets have been in contact, such as Jon Heyman saying the Mets had interest in him as recently as January 4.
Hand would be huge, as the 30-year-old posted a startling 1.37 FIP in 2020, along with 2.80 the year prior. He has been one of baseball’s better closers for years now, and beyond just being left-handed, would legitimately be one of the best relievers in the Mets bullpen and round it out really nicely.
Of course, there are plenty of other left-handed relievers out there who the Mets could pick up if they miss out on hand. While the bullpen is coming together nicely, they are a little short on southpaws, so any left-handed reliever would be a great help to the depth of this team.
