The Championship Series has been a one-sided affair in each league thus far, as the Tampa Bay Rays and the Atlanta Braves appear to be destined to meet in this year’s World Series. Tampa has continued to capitalize on Houston’s mistakes, while playing some of the best defense we have seen in baseball in a very long time.
With that great play through every facet of the game, the Rays jumped out to a commanding 3-0 series lead over the Astros last night. Meanwhile, despite being the favorite coming into the series, the Los Angeles Dodgers have had their hands full trying to keep up with the Atlanta Braves.
The Braves just keep on mashing, scoring 13 runs through two games thus far to take a 2-0 lead in the NLCS. Los Angeles needs to get on the board in a must-win game tonight, otherwise they will find themselves in the same 3-0 hole that Houston is in now.
Los Angeles Dodgers vs Atlanta Braves, 6:05 p.m. ET, Game 3 at Globe Life Park (Braves Up 2-0) – FS1
LHP Julio Urias vs RHP Kyle Wright
The Dodgers suffered a big blow yesterday when it was announced that Clayton Kershaw was scratched from his start due to back spasms. Tony Gonsolin started in his place and ended up getting rocked, allowing five runs on three hits and three walks. The Braves took a 7-0 lead into the bottom of the seventh, but the Dodgers showed fight to get back in it.
L.A. scored seven runs over the final three frames, including four in the bottom of the ninth inning. Unfortunately for the Dodgers, a home run at the top of the frame by Ozzie Albies made all the difference and Atlanta won 8-7 to take the commanding series lead.
Left-handed pitcher Julio Urias will be tasked with saving the Dodgers season, as he takes the ball as a starter for the first time this postseason. The 24-year-old has yet to allow a run in the playoffs, having pitched eight scoreless innings out of the pen. Urias earned the victory in the series-clinching game of the NLDS last Thursday, pitching five innings of bulk relief out of the pen.
Meanwhile the Braves will counter with the winning pitcher from their NLDS-clinching win last Thursday as well. Kyle Wright made the first postseason start of his career against the Miami Marlins and hurled a gem. The 25-year-old allowed just three hits and struck out seven, across six scoreless frames. Now he is set to face a much tougher task, going against this dangerous Dodgers lineup.
Tampa Bay Rays vs Houston Astros, 8:40 p.m. ET, Game 4 at Petco Park (Rays Up 3-0) – TBS
RHP Tyler Glasnow vs RHP Zack Greinke
The Houston Astros will look for Zack Greinke to turn back the clock as they face elimination for the first time this postseason. Greinke actually has not earned a victory in the playoffs since beating the Mets in Game 2 of the NLDS, which was the infamous Chase Utley dirty slide game.
Greinke has been limited due to arm soreness as of late, but did give the Astros 4 2/3 innings in Game 4 of the ALDS vs the Oakland Athletics. The veteran right-hander gave up four runs, although that was enough for Houston’s lineup, which scored 11 runs in the series-clinching game.
Tyler Glasnow will make his fourth postseason start for the Rays, as he tries to pitch them to their second pennant in franchise history. Glasnow pitched on just two days rest in Game 5 of the ALDS last Friday. The 27-year-old kept the Yankees off the board through the first two frames, before being removed with one out in the third inning. Tampa would hold on to beat the Yankees 2-1.
It surely feels like this Tampa Bay Rays team has the upper-edge in this series, as everything has gone their way so far. Houston had a really opportunity to grab Game 3, but a throwing error on a potential inning-ending double play by Jose Altuve opened the floodgates. The Rays went on to score five runs in the sixth inning after that error, eventually beating the Astros 5-2.
Will Houston be able to stave off elimination for at least one night?
