Several members of the New York Mets attended Saturday’s Citi Field Fan Fest. One such Met was Jeff McNeil.
McNeil was the very definition of a super utility man for the Mets in 2019, playing a total of four defensive positions both in the infield and outfield. He did well in the field across the four positions, as he committed only 11 errors and had three defensive runs saved.
As he looks forward to his third year in the majors, McNeil, 27, has said that he intends to be somewhat less of a nomad in the field and concentrate more of his efforts in the infield, specifically third base.
“I think I will playing a lot of third (this upcoming season),” McNeil said, while not ruling out playing around the diamond as well. “At the same time, I’ll play some left field, second base. I’ll still kind of do that same role…wherever they put me, I’ll be ready.”
Playing defense all over the diamond last year certainly did not hurt his offensive numbers. He led the league in hitting at the All-Star break, stroking .348 and was selected as a reserve for the All-Star game itself. He ended the season with a .318/.384/.531 slash line with 23 home runs and 75 RBI.
On Aug. 5, 2019, McNeil recorded his 200th career hit in his 599th career at bat, becoming the fastest player in Mets history to 200 career hits. He swung at the highest percentage of pitches (59.9%), and the highest percentage of pitches inside the strike zone, of all major league batters (85.0%).
McNeil also has an unfortunate penchant for getting hit by pitches as he was plunked 21 times in 2019, fifth most in baseball. On Sept. 25, McNeil left the game early after being struck on the wrist by a pitch, resulting in a right distal ulnar fracture on his right wrist. That was the last we saw of McNeil in 2019. When asked about his wrist for the upcoming season, McNeil said “it is as good as new.”
With Yoenis Cespedes seemingly ahead of schedule medically and with the addition of Jake Marisnick, the outfield seems a little crowded. Michael Conforto and Brandon Nimmo should start nearly everyday making it likely that McNeil will be an infielder most of 2020.
At the end of Fan Fest, McNeil, along with Robinson Cano and Edwin Diaz, helped Mr. and Mrs. Met pack up the truck for Spring Training which begins in a matter of weeks. We can add one more position McNeil does well and that is as a mover.
