Baseball America released their first mock draft for 2020 on Monday with the Mets taking a college arm.
With the No. 19 pick in the 2020 draft, Baseball America has the Mets taking right-handed pitcher Slade Cecconi.
Cecconi, 20, will be a sophomore at the University of Miami this upcoming season. He went 5-3 with a 4.10 ERA, 1.26 WHIP, 66 strikeouts, and only six home runs allowed in 59 1/3 innings over 12 games (11 starts).
The Florida native was taken in the 38th round of 2018 draft by the Orioles out of Trinity Prep in Winter Park, Florida. He was rated the No. 62 prospect by MLB Pipeline headed into the draft.
Baseball America said the following about Cecconi:
This is perhaps the most aggressive pick we have in this edition of the mock—relative to our current draft rankings—but Cecconi was a monster on the showcase circuit out of high school…Scouts love Cecconi’s stuff and large mix of pitches and he could blow up with a loud spring for the Hurricanes.
Cecconi features a mid 90’s fastball with natural sink, sharp slider that flashes as a plus offering, curve in the upper 70’s, and a changeup.
Hurricane Sports has him listed at 6’4” and 219 pounds, up from 186 pounds when he was first drafted.
