As detailed by Craig Calcaterra of NBC Sports, MLB commissioner Rob Manfred threatened on Friday night to drop their affiliation with minor league baseball.
“If the National Association [of Minor League Clubs] has an interest in an agreement with Major League Baseball, it must address the very significant issues with the current system at the bargaining table,” Manfred released as a statement. “Otherwise, MLB clubs will be free to affiliate with any minor league team or potential team in the United States, including independent league teams and cities which are not permitted to compete for an affiliate under the current agreement.”
This is coming in the midst of a heated negotiation as Minor League Baseball and Major League Baseball attempt to reach a new Professional Baseball Agreement.
MLB’s attempt to strip 42 minor league teams from Minor League Baseball has caused an uproar that has stretched far and wide, with U.S. senators even weighing in.
