Baseball America started the revealing of their 2019 MLB award winners by naming Pete Alonso the Rookie of the Year in a unanimous decision.
The 24-year-old hit .260/.358/.583 with 30 doubles, major-league leading 53 home runs, and 120 RBI. His 53 homers shattered the Mets previous single season franchise record of 41 and also broke Aaron Judge‘s rookie record of 52.
Alonso was an All-Star for the Mets in his first big league season and bested Vladimir Guerrero Jr. to take home the Home Run Derby crown.
The right-handed slugger finished fifth in the National League with his 5.8 bWAR and his 85 extra base hits led the league.
Alonso also won Rookie of the Month three times this season; April, June, and September. He was the National League Player of the Week for June 23.
Baseball America’s full 2019 rookie team included Guerrero, Fernando Tatis Jr., Keston Hiura, and others.
