As per Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune, San Diego Padres shortstop, Fernando Tatis Jr., is “likely done for the season” after being placed on the 10-day injured list on Friday (retroactive to August 14) with a stress reaction in his lower back. Tatis, 20, came out of Wednesday’s afternoon contest with Tampa Bay after appearing to injure himself mid-swing.
Over 372 plate appearances this season, the son of former MLB player, Fernando Tatis, has a .317/.379/.590 slash line with 22 home runs, 13 doubles, six triples, 53 RBIs, and 110 strikeouts.
Among all qualified MLB rookies, Tatis’ 149 wRC+ and .389 wOBA are tied with the Mets’ Pete Alonso and Pittsburgh’s Bryan Reynolds, respectively, for best in the league and Tatis’ 3.7 wins above replacement (FanGraphs) rank second — behind Alonso — within that same group.
With Tatis presumably on the shelf for the remainder of the season, the door has certainly been opened a bit wider for players like Alonso, Reynolds, and Atlanta’s young right-hander, Mike Soroka (2.32 ERA is best among qualified rookies and second among qualified MLB starters) to pull ahead in the National League Rookie of the Year race.
We’ll keep you posted with any new information.
