As per Mike Puma of the New York Post, injured New York Mets outfielder, Brandon Nimmo (bulging cervical disk), has dealt with “other physical issues that popped up at various points” in his rehab process.

Despite these rogue, unknown setbacks, Puma reports there’s “optimism [Nimmo] might begin a minor-league rehab assignment within the week”.

After starting the 2019 season on a 2-for-26 slide, albeit with five walks, the 26-year-old picked himself up substantially over the next few weeks. From April 7 to April 28 (63 plate appearances), Nimmo slashed .333/.429/.574 with three homers and four doubles.

On April 14 at Atlanta, Nimmo crashed in the outfield wall, sustaining the initial injury. So for two weeks, he was playing well despite presumably being in a great deal of pain. From April 29 through May 20, Nimmo, clearly under duress, hit .120/.308/.180 over 65 plate appearances.

On May 22 (retroactive to May 21), he was placed on the 10-day injured list with what was originally classified as a “stiff neck”. On May 25, his true diagnosis, as well as a new one — whiplash — was reported. On Thursday, Nimmo was shifted to the 60-day IL to make room for the Mets’ new right-handed reliever, Brad Brach.

Nimmo went 2-for-14 over five games with Advanced-A St. Lucie and Triple-A Syracuse in an aborted mid-June rehab assignment but has been on the shelf since. We’ll keep you posted with any new information.
