According to Jon Morosi of MLB.com, the San Diego Padres have “inquired about the availability” of Mets’ ace Noah Syndergaard and are looking to acquire a controllable starter with the help of their strong farm system.
Syndergaard, 26, is having a down year, but still brings a ton of trade value to the table. Syndergaard is 6-4 with a 4.68 ERA so far this season, but has generally pitched better than the stat line will show.
He has been haunted by bad defense time and time again, which is evident by his 3.98 FIP, almost a full run lower than his ERA. Thor would benefit from playing behind a strong defense, like the one in San Diego, which makes this a very appealing move for the Friars.
In addition to his evident talent, Noah Syndergaard carries significant contract control to the table in a possible trade. Syndergaard won’t be a free agent until after 2021, which means he brings two and a half years of club control to any trade discussion, which will allow the Mets demands for a return to be very high.
As for the Padres, they have one of the strongest, if not the strongest, farm systems in baseball. They have eight of MLB.com’s Top 100 Prospects, and a few budding young stars like Chris Paddack, Logan Allen, and Fernando Tatis Jr., that are recently graduated from the Top 100 list.
The Mets and Padres have talked before on a possible Syndergaard trade previously, but never have appeared to come close to an agreement.
