Zack Wheeler struggled on Thursday in the Mets 7-6 loss to the Nationals and was beat by Washington for the second time this season in three starts.
In the first inning, Wheeler allowed the first four batters he faced to reach. After getting a run-scoring double play to potentially limit the damage, the right-hander gave up back-to-back RBI doubles to Gerardo Parra and Anthony Rendon.
The right-hander settled in to follow the first with three scoreless innings. Unfortunately, the Nationals tacked on two more in the fifth on a double from Kendrick, which resulted from a Michael Conforto and Robinson Cano collision, and a home run from Parra in the next at bat.
Wheeler finished the day having pitched six innings of six-run baseball. His ERA now sits at 4.85 for the year with a 2.87 FIP and 1.35 WHIP. Wheeler ended his day after throwing 98 pitches, 68 of them strikes. He had six strikeouts and two walks for the day.
Wheeler spoke about his outing today and struggles with locating the strike zone today, “I missed a lot with fastball command.”
Ultimately Wheeler knows that he needs to be better in his next start, “Most of it was on me today I take responsibility for this… because we’ve been scoring some runs…you want to keep those runs off the board and give our team a chance.”
Wheeler has allowed a whopping 17 runs in 15.2 innings vs the Nationals this year and only 13 runs in 40 innings against the rest of the league.
Mickey Callaway spoke about the 28 year old’s performance adding his thoughts on the start “… [Wheeler] threw the ball better than the numbers showed.” and included “the first three hits[of the game] were good pitches.” After mentioning the well-placed pitches, unfortunately put in play, Mickey added that there was a good chance those first few at bats went Wheeler’s way if they were hit on any other part of the bat.
Overall Mickey’s thoughts on Wheeler’s performance, “I thought he threw the ball good.”
After posting a 3.31 ERA last season and having a stellar second half of the season, Wheeler has proven to be less effective this year. In Wheeler’s last four starts, he has given up 14 earned runs in 26 innings of work.
With the lack of consistency from key starters like Wheeler and Syndergaard, there is some level of concern for the team’s pitching going forward, especially since there is no clear indication of the level of success you will be getting from Jason Vargas and Steven Matz after their IL stints.
