As per David Lennon of Newsday, New York Mets backup first-baseman, Dominic Smith, is doing all he can to garner any additional playing time he can.
“Dom Smith has repeatedly asked [the Mets] to use him in [left field] to help get in the lineup,” Lennon tweeted. “But they see him strictly as a first-baseman and won’t waver on that. For now.”
Smith, 23, has performed extremely well in limited appearances this season. After him and rookie sensation, Pete Alonso both made the ballclub out of Spring Training, Alonso has all but ran away with the job.
The left-handed hitting Smith owns a .344/.462/.500 slash line over 39 plate appearances in 2019, notching would-be career-bests in walk rate (15.4%), as well as strikeout percentage (17.9%).
The former first-round draft pick (2013; 11th overall) has played a total of 90 major-league innings in left field, and although him in left and Jeff McNeil at third base would be a fine setup, apparently, the Mets aren’t ready to pull that lever just yet.
We’ll keep you posted as more information becomes available.
