The Mets acquired RHP Wilmer Font from the Tampa Bay Rays on May 6 for a player to be named later or cash considerations.
According to Marc Topkin from the Tampa Bay Times, the Rays are expecting to get a young player with “some prospect status” from the Mets in the Font trade. He went on to include that the transaction should be finalized sometime in the next couple of weeks.
After much speculation on who will start on Wednesday, Font told team reporters that he would get the ball. Font will be available to potentially throw up to 80 pitches according to Tim Healey of Newsday. He last pitched on May 1 when he threw 59 pitches.
Font started five games for the Rays in 2018. Over those five starts and four relief appearances, Font had a 1.67 ERA in 27 innings pitched. He also posted a 0.96 WHIP with the team that year. In the beginning of 2019, Font claimed the role as a relief pitcher with a 5.79 ERA, 3.50 FIP, and 11.6 K/9.
The right-hander is out of options.
