The New York Mets made a handful of roster moves ahead of Monday’s series opener in San Diego.
A team announcement confirmed that left-hander Jason Vargas would be heading to the IL after experiencing left hamstring tightness in Sunday’s loss to Milwaukee. Vargas, 36, has a 5.92 earned-run average with 20 strikeouts and 12 walks this season and registered a 3.00 ERA over his last four outings.
Another veteran pitcher, Justin Wilson, was activated off the IL.
Wilson, 31, signed a two-year, $10 million free-agent deal with the Mets this past offseason and put up a 3.24 ERA with eight strikeouts, four walks, and 1.20 WHIP over nine appearances (8.1 innings) before hitting the IL with elbow soreness on April 22. His return should bode well for this beleaguered Mets’ bullpen.
In addition to Wilson returning, right-hander Corey Oswalt was recalled. Oswalt, 25, has a 3.06 ERA, 17 strikeouts, four walks over three starts (17.2 innings) with Triple-A Syracuse this season and a 12.15 ERA over 6.2 relief innings (two appearances) with the Mets this year.
Tim Peterson, 28, was optioned to Syracuse. The right-hander has a 2.84 ERA over five relief appearances this season (6.1 innings) with three strikeouts and six walks.
