Major League Baseball announced on Thursday that Mets first baseman Pete Alonso has been selected as the National League Rookie of the Month for March/April. Rays infielder Brandon Lowe was named the AL Rookie of the Month.

Alonso, 24, slashed .292/.382/.642 in the month with eight doubles, a triple, nine home runs, and 26 RBI. He led all qualified NL rookies in RBI, HR, and slugging percentage.

The right-hander slugger also posted a 1.7 bWAR in the month that included two defensive runs saved at first. He tied a Mets franchise rookie record for homers in a calendar month with nine, Darryl Strawberry originally set the record in August of 1983.

Alonso becomes the first Mets to win the award since Steven Matz did back in May of 2016.
