The Mets won 1-0 over the Reds on Thursday afternoon at Citi field with Noah Syndergaard doing most of the work. (Box Score)

Syndergaard became just the eighth pitcher since 1908 to pitch a shutout while hitting a home run for the only run of the game. He’s the first since Bob Welch in 1983.

Pitching

Noah Syndergaard started for the Mets today and it turns out he’s actually pretty good.

In the first, he struck out two and worked around a hit from Derek Dietrich.

In the second, he gave up a single to lead off the inning to Jose Peraza. He managed to get a double play ball from Jose Iglesias almost immediately after that. He did proceed to make an error though but also managed go work around that.

In the third, he struck out the pitcher and got a ground out from Jesse Winkler but walked Eugenio Suarez with two-outs. He got Dietrich to lineout though.

In the fourth, he retired the side in order and very easily too. The fifth was also retired in order and the only strikeout came from the opposing pitcher. Syndergaard was getting a lot of weak and quick outs.

In the sixth, he gave up a single to Suarez with one-out but got Dietrich to double play to end the inning.

In the seventh, he retired the side in order and struck out Jose Iglesias and Peraza in the process. The eighth inning only cost Noah just 10 pitches and he struck out Joey Votto to end the inning.

With Edwin Diaz and Seth Lugo unavailable, Syndergaard got the ninth inning with just 94 pitches. He struck out Winker and got Suarez to fly out.  Dietrich got a single though but Syndergaard settled down to strikeout Yasiel Puig and end the game.

Final line on Syndergaard:

9 IP, 4 H, 0 R, BB, 10 K, 104 pitches/74 strikes
