According to Evan Drellich of WEEI, the Red Sox have designated the versatile Blake Swihart for assignment.

Swihart, 27, was hitting .231/.310/.385 with one double, one homer, and four RBI in 29 plate appearances this season for the defending champs.

On defense, Swihart started six games at catcher while also playing one inning at first and six in left field. He has previous experience at third base, second base, and right field as well.

The switch-hitting former top 20 MLB prospect has yet to put it together at the highest level, with a .679 OPS in 203 big league games.

The former first round pick is out-of-options and is under team control through the 2022 season.
