Matt Ehalt of Yahoo Sports reports that Luis Avilan has exercised his upwards mobility clause, meaning that if the Mets don’t place him on the Opening Day roster, he becomes available to all 29 other teams to place on theirs.
Avilan, 29, signed a minor league deal with the Mets this offseason and so far this Spring has a 2.38 ERA, 0.88 WHIP, and 13 strikeouts in nine appearances (11 1/3 innings of work).
In 2018, the left-hander split his season between the Chicago White Sox and the division-rival Philadelphia Phillies in which he registered a 3.77 ERA, 1.37 WHIP, and 51 strikeouts in 70 appearances (45 1/3 innings pitched).
Given his strong performance in Spring Training, Avilan is almost certain to make the team as the second left-hander. As of now, the Opening Day bullpen is likely to include Edwin Diaz, Jeurys Familia, Justin Wilson, Seth Lugo, Robert Gsellman, Luis Avilan, and Kyle Dowdy.
