On Thursday morning, Baseball Prospectus released their PECOTA projections for the 2019 season. After a busy offseason, they have the New York Mets finishing the season with a 89-73 record, which is tied with the Washington Nationals atop the National League East.

Last season, the Mets finished the year in fourth place in the East with a 77-85 record. This offseason new General Manager Brodie Van Wagenen added a ton of depth pieces, but also brought some star talent to Queens in Robinson Cano, Wilson Ramos, Jed Lowrie, Edwin Diaz, and Justin Wilson.

Van Wagenen and company also made some big changes to the coaching staff, adding veteran Jim Riggleman as Mickey Callaway’s new bench coach and Chilli Davis as the new hitting coach.

Here is how PECOTA has the NL East shaping out (prior to the J.T. Realmuto trade):

  • New York Mets 89-73
  • Washington Nationals 89-73
  •  Atlanta Braves 84-79
  • Philadelphia Phillies 84-79
  • Miami Marlins 66-96

As for the rest of the National League, PECOTA has the Milwaukee Brewers (89-73) winning the NL Central and the Los Angeles Dodgers (95-67) winning the NL West. In the American League, they have the New York Yankees (96-66) taking home the East, the Cleveland Indians (96-66) winning the Central, and the Houston Astros (99-63) winning the West.

Tomorrow afternoon, part two of the 2019 PECOTA projections will focus on the players.
