New York Mets veteran infielder Robinson Cano is playing in the Dominican Winter League finals. He is playing second base and batting ninth for the Estrellas de Oriente on Tuesday night, they hold a 3-1 lead over Toros del Este in the finals.
Former Met Jenrry Mejia is the starting pitcher for Toros del Este.
Talks of Cano playing began last week, but hit a snag when Estrellas de Oriente found out they would have pay roughly $3 million in an insurance premium. Cano has played in just one regular season game for the Estrellas de Oriente this decade.
The Mets acquired Cano along with closer Edwin Diaz from the Mariners in exchange for Jay Bruce, Anthony Swarzak, Gerson Bautista, Justin Dunn and Jarred Kelenic.
